Zeno Judson Bradley

[James Banks, Thomas]

Many many thanks to Banks Vest, descendant of Zeno by way of Fye Lula, for his immeasurable help in providing years worth of research conducted by family members (particularly his aunt Kathleen McRea Beazley Stalnaker) to help us begin solving Zeno’s story. He has also provided photos of folks I never even dared hope we have photos of. Thank you!

Born: 2 Mar 1841 in AL

Married: Sometime between 1860 and 1870 to (Phillip?) Vasser (Vassar or perhaps even Ussary)

Married: Sometime between 1870 and 1880 to William Henry McRae (McRay)

  • According to the 1880 census, she and William Henry were divorced. However, since she has a 5 month old with the last name “McRay”, it seems reasonable that her divorce was fairly recent. Interestingly, she has a 14 year old named “Bradly”.

  1. Lorena M. Bradley (F, 1866, SC) //Father: Phillip Vasser
  2. Fye Lula “Daisie” McRay (F, 1879, SC) //Father: William Henry McRae (A rather full genealogy of Fye Lula’s descendants is in my possession and will not be placed on this site due to the volume. If you are interested, please contact me by leaving a comment below.)

So here’s what I’ve pieced together on Zeno. She’s at home with Banks and Mahaza in 1860. In 1870 she is listed as “Vasser” and living with her mother in Bradford Springs, SC and she also has a daughter, Lorena Vasser. By 1880 she has two daughters, Lorena (now going by Bradley) and “Daisie” born in late 1879 going by McRay and Zeno’s last name is McRay, but she’s divorced. In 1886 she married James Hawk. In 1897 she and her husband are on a legal document in Morgan Co acting as security for her brother, Stephen Banks, as he takes on an apprentice. On this document she is Zeno Hawk and her husband is “JE”. In 1900 she’s married to James E Hawk (and has been since 1886). In 1905 James Hawk died. In 1910 she’s still Hawk, but is a widow. This census also indicates that she only had two children. So the names we have from the 1880 census are her only children. She appears on the 1920 census in Alabama married to Ben Wilson. Sometime between 1920 and 1927 she moved to Florida where she died and was buried in the Tampa area on 1 Sept 1927.
